Pedagogical and Methodological Approach

1. Language Immersion
At Berceo Salamanca, we understand one thing: you travel to Spain—physically or virtually—to immerse yourself in a Spanish speaking culture. Therefore, our pedagogical approach revolves around linguistic cultural immersion inside the classroom and striving to motivate it outside as well. Consequently, even from the first day of an absolute beginner level, Spanish is the working language in class.
Spanish must be the communication tool for its own acquisition: both the means and the educational goal.

2. Communication
We have already said it: Spanish is a communication tool and part of a cultural system. For this reason, the approach can only be communicative. Communication in class is everything, and our goal is to prepare you for the countless communicative situations that will require activating your Spanish language and culture competencies based on the synergies between comprehension and expression skills. Thus, classes are governed by the information gap, expressive freedom, dynamic and varied situational contexts, and feedback.

3. Flexible and Syncretic Methods
Communicative teaching has gone through many stages and approaches, from notional functional programs, with the “memorization” of notional structures, to task based approaches. Our proposal is framed within the eclecticism of the multiple methods of the communicative model and the principles of cognitive linguistics. After all, Spanish, as a linguistic system (code), constitutes only one component of the communicative process, understood within a pragmatic cognitive framework. Hence, it is essential to combine the acquisition of linguistic competencies—in a broad sense, i.e., the Spanish language—and the remaining communicative components (elements, representations, and processes).

4. Student Autonomy
Our ambition is our students’ success in communicative situations that require Spanish. With that in mind, our teaching is oriented toward student autonomy.
We see the student as the main actor; the teacher as a temporary guide and mediator who leads students on a journey that, although it begins in class, they must eventually travel alone. Therefore, our methods are structured around exposure, induction, feedback, and finally, intentional automatization through metacognitive strategies.

5. Affective Education
For us, the student transcends the purely cognitive. As we aspire to their autonomy, we also consider personal and psychological factors, attention to their needs and diversity.
We foster motivation, seek elements of interest that align with their present and future needs. We stimulate students’ self understanding and empathy among all group members. Learning, in essence, is developing as a person during an integral process where knowledge, abilities, and confidence walk the same path.

6. Active Methodologies and Continuous Assessment
Having said all this, we are convinced that eclecticism allows us to take the best from every idea, approach, method, or methodology. Why settle for a single option? We aspire to be comprehensive, flexible, and adapt to you as a learner, as a person. That is why our courses are articulated, within a pragmatic cognitive communicative approach, through activities based on multiple active methodologies—mainly such as project based, case based, and problem based learning, cooperative learning, flipped classrooms, guided debates and discussions, realistic role plays tailored to student profiles; research based learning, peer instruction, gamification, visual thinking, or competency based learning, among many others. All this does not exclude the use of more traditional activities, for example, structuralist type exercises, as long as they pursue active and communicative learning or are adapted to your needs.
